TACITUS: AB EXCESSU ETC. I, 65: THE "LONG BRIDGES"

It is very probable that GERMANICUS took the way between the TEUTOBURG FOREST and the "WIEHERN"-MOUNTAINS in direction of a place, which in our days is OSNABRÜCK. This region, full of swamps and woods near rivers was probably the land of the BRUCTERI. So it was possible to burn the little villages alongside the road. At the little river HASE, in the north and east of OSNABRÜCK, the land of the CHAMAVI began, who were friendly to the Romans. From the camp at the AMISIA a fleet of barges on the HASE came towards the army. The "lower" army had to provides oneself with food. The "upper" army returned to VETERA by ship, whereas the "lower" one had to march back to VETERA by foot. The commander of the "lower" army was CAECINA.
