WHO WAS CORNELIUS TACITUS: "WE DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE LIFE OF TACITUS." (KARL BÜCHNER)

What we know: He was born around 55 after Christ, probably in Gaul (Gallia). His father-in-law was AGRICOLA, a high-ranking government official, coming from FORUM IULII, whose daughter he married in 77, when AGRICOLA was consul. Thus TACITUS, originating from an old Patrician family, seemed to have the confidence of AGRICOLA, meaning his career was safe and "normal" (Büchner) for a man like him. In the preface of the "HISTORIAE" he mentions that his position was established by VESPASIANUS, raised by TITUS and promoted by DOMITIANUS a good deal.
In 88 TACITUS became "praetor". As a "quindecimvir sacris faciundis" he often met with DOMITIANUS. 97 he was "consul suffectus" and delivered a funeral oration for VERGINUIS having oppressed the uprising of VINDEX and turned down the rank of an emperor three times. In 100 together with PLINIUS he stood up for the "Africans" against the "proconsul" MARIUS PRISCUS, charged with blackmail. PLINIUS gives us full of pride a report about this, praising the sublime seriousness and gravity (semnotes) of TACITUS' speech. Between 112 and 116 he was governor in the province of "Asia". TACITUS died in 120 AD.
